JustPoker Tip Of The Week #3

Know your strategy, but be ready to think outside the box

Big-time winning poker players will sometimes break from their standard, successful strategies, but only for obvious reasons.

An average player might start raising 9♠️ 7♠️ suited in an early position because he is bored or wants to make something happen.

An elite player will only do this if he notices something specific about the table. Like maybe there are a couple of recreational players in the blinds, or maybe the table is very passive. They might have got a read on one of their opponents. The main point is that they have a reason for everything that they do.

A great rule to follow is that if you are able to produce a well-reasoned argument why deviating from your regular strategy might be more profitable, then it is okay.  The “because I feel like it” or “I am bored” reasoning has to go, it will only lead you into mistakes.

Poker is a game of skill when approached in a calculated way with a strategy. But even the best strategy’s can fall apart because of the luck factor. So its important to be able to adapt to different circumstances and be willing to think outside the box from time to time.
